A homestay made of mud near Munnar, Kerala

Encircled by hills and set in a quiet corner of Kerala’s Western Ghats, an hour away from Munnar, is a retreat perfect for those looking for solitude amidst beautiful Mother Nature.

As the name suggests, the structures at The Mudhouse are made of mud and thatch and were built with the help of the local tribal community using their traditional building techniques and practices. The property has two large independent ‘huts’, each comprising of a kitchen, living area, bedroom and a large semi-open-to-air bathroom. This is an ideal setting for an intimate and small get together of close family or friends. An Asian breakfast is included and the property’s kitchen also serves other meals if required.

The best part of the property might be the garden that offers great views of the surrounding hills and valleys and is also an ideal spot for enjoying al fresco meals or for taking your daily cuppa.

The hosts also offer bicycle and car rental services so you can discover the many sights this region is known for.

This area is the only part of Kerala with natural sandalwood forests. There are dolmens and rock paintings that date back to the Stone Age. The Eravikulam National Park and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary are also nearby, as is the tea town of Munnar. You could also ask the in-house cooks to teach you some of the local dishes or head out to nearby villages to interact with the local craftspeople. So, those who like their holidays filled with sightseeing and things-to-do will be fully occupied.

For those who want to stay away from the rest of the world for a few days—the rooms with their swing-like beds and the pretty green garden offer much scope for quiet contemplation!

Price: From Rs 4,000; includes breakfast
