Art Ichol
Art Ichol

An art retreat in Maihar, Madhya Pradesh

This is a retreat in its truest sense! Surrounded by fields of mustard and sugarcane, Art Ichol is an artist residency but you don’t have to be an artist to stay here and rejuvenate yourself. The four-acre property conducts workshops and has artists staying for various lengths of time. It is also home to numerous art installations, many made from reclaimed or recycled materials. The main Art Ichol Centre has well-appointed rooms, studios and a café. There is also the writer’s cottage, Amariya, set on the banks of the River Tamas. The grass-covered banks are perfect for an idyllic picnic and for a spell of trout fishing.

The 100-year-old Maihar Heritage Homestay is a pretty hideout, complete with a spacious courtyard, lovely creeper-covered arches bordering the porch and large bedrooms with comfy four-poster beds. As a guest here you can try your hand at one of the art disciplines taught by resident artists, visit nearby villages, spend time in the art café or just enjoy the birdsong.

Price: Rs 6,500 per person per night; includes all three meals, taxes are extra

Art Ichol has used recycled waste and industrial scrap in its building and even in the works of art and sculpture displayed. They have also used traditional eco-friendly building techniques and local materials like Surkhi plaster and Khaprael terracotta tiles for roofing. The Centre practices organic farming and also encourages young farmers nearby to do the same. It also regularly holds workshops in local schools on theatre, music and art, along with sessions on behavioural patterns and showing respect towards girls and women. Besides being an Art Centre, an important vertical is to share knowledge and develop skills of the women and children in the surrounding villages through steps like teaching embroidery using local motifs.
