Goa

Travellers are moving beyond Goa's beaches, finally! Goa’s lush green hinterland has its fair share of attractions and Khoj-aao! is a tour operator that helps travellers explore the literal wild side of state.

It offers day trips and overnight tours focused on exploring the natural world, the rich biodiversity of the state and also the state’s unique culture.

The name of the venture offers a clue into the type of trips and tours the outfit offers. A play on the Hindi words ‘khoj’, ‘aao’ and ‘khojaaoo’, the name could mean “come, look for…” or “to get lost” or “wander”—all pleasurable suggestions for travellers!

The trips and tours vary. The Backyard Nature Trail, a half-day hike in North Goa, takes guests on a walk up a small hillock and through a shrub forest. The idea is to look at the natural world, be it birds, butterflies or plants, that co-exist in this inhabited part of Goa. The Day in the Forest trip is primarily a day trip (from 7am to 7pm) but for those so inclined an overnight camping stretch can be added. This tour is an exploration of Goa’s hinterland, where guests get to see quaint Goan villages and dense forests. Guests get to hike into the forest, wade through gurgling streams, visit an ancient 13th century temple, relish a picnic lunch and spend evening teatime with a local family. The overnight camping gives guests a chance to cook over a fire, stargaze and reconnect with nature and one's self.

Price: Depends on the tour. The Backyard Nature Trail, for instance, costs Rs 1,200 per person (Includes guide services, equipment and refreshments), while the Day in the Forest day tour (without overnight camping) costs Rs 2,500 per person (includes breakfast, lunch, tea, guide services, equipment and transport).
