Great Himalayan National Park, Himachal Pradesh

There is nothing on Earth that can match the majesty of the Himalayas. Thanks to the size of this mountain range, a traveller can still find destinations hidden away in the Himalayas that are relatively untouched by tourism. The Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) is one such. Though it is located close to such tourist havens like Kullu and Manali, the GHNP has been cocooned from the ills of mass tourism. One of the contributing reasons is the fact that no vehicles are allowed inside the Park. Travellers can experience the beauty of the Park by hiking and trekking its many trails.

Himalayan Ecotourism, based in GHNP’s Tirthan Valley, offers trekking and camping trips that show the travellers the best the Park has to offer. The operator offers customised all-inclusive trips (scheduled treks will start next year), led by experienced local guides and staff. The operator takes care of everything from accommodation in the nearby towns before and after the trek to all equipment and fresh meals during the treks. With experienced guides the chances of catching a glimpse of the rarely seen residents of the Park, like the Himalayan Brown Bear, the Himalayan Tahr and the most elusive of them all—the Snow Leopard—go up!

Price: From Rs 5,005 (2 days) to Rs 26,435 (8 days) per person (when a trek has 5 participants).

A social enterprise, Himalayan Ecotourism, works with local communities to ensure social and economic empowerment as well as preserving the ecological diversity of the GHNP. Himalayan Ecotourism is a joint venture between a cooperative formed by the 65 local guides, who guide travellers opting for the company’s treks, and the firm that takes care of management and marketing. This model ensures greater say for the locals. The company also organises treks that are staffed completely by women and can also take people with physical disabilities on treks.
